pitter patter, drips and drops
I love the rain...
I love the fresh smell of the earth... cleansing feeling as all the grime and soot and smog is washed away...
I love the how the world looks so dreamy and surreal when viewed through the windows of a train or bus as the rain runs down the side...
I love waking up all nice a cosy under my doona when its cold and wet outside...
I love the sound of car tyres being driven on a wet road
It's funny how rain can evoke such contradicting emotions and moods. It can elicit feelings of coziness, sipping hot cuppas while watching the water running down the windows, or memories of sharing the warmth and company of family or loved ones. And on the flipside, it stereotypes and reminds us of sadness, pain, heartbreak and loss, loneliness and despair.
It also reminds us of the life that it brings to the earth. Especially after the rain is gone, and the sun comes out, the earth is filled with a refreshing air. Everything sparkles with renewed life.
as it's been raining these last few days, i've been listening in particular to 2 songs on my ipod that are quite fitting to the current climate conditions. Both are very different in style and content to each other, poles apart in some respect, and both reflect much of what was said just above and yet, paradoxically, the lyrics of both songs sing true in my heart... :)
Flood
Jars of Clay
Rain rain on my face
It hasn't stopped raining for days
My world is a flood
Slowly I become one with the mud
But if I can't swim after forty days
And my mind is crushed by the crashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - When I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again
Down pour on my soul
Splashing in the ocean I'm losing control
Dark sky all around
I can't feel my feet touching the ground
But if I can't swim after forty days
And my mind is crushed by the crashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - When I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again
Calm the storms that drench my eyes
And dry the streams still flowing
Casting down all the waves of sin
And guilt that overthrow me
If I can't swim after forty days
And my mind is crushed by the crashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall - Lift me up
Singin' in the Rain
Frank Sinatra
I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Ev'ryone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
And singing just singing in the rain

Contrasting songs indeed. But indicative of the heights and depths of emotion that humanity can feel. Let's hope something positive happens this weekend with Live8 :)
